Oklahoma State Part of Exclusive 20-10 Football-Basketball Club in 2016-17
The Final Four is here, and all but four teams’ final destinies for 2017 have been secured. With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to take a look at all the 20-win (basketball) and 10-win (football) teams nationally. Oklahoma State made the exclusive list.
They were one of just seven Power 5 teams to do so along with Wisconsin, West Virginia, Florida State, Michigan, USC and Virginia Tech.
The following list is a sort of weighted version that answers how good you were at football and hoops. I simply multiplied football wins by 2.5x and added it to basketball wins. The thinking there was the best football team won 14 games. The best basketball team won 36. Fourteen times 2.5 is 35. Seems reasonable.
Also, Oklahoma State won 10 in football. That felt like a 25ish win basketball season. The opposite is true, too. The 20-win basketball season OSU just had felt like an 8-win football season.
Anyway, here’s that list. Bucky!
Team | Football Ws | Hoops Ws | Total Ws | Weighted (football x2.5) |
---|---|---|---|---|
Wisconsin | 11 | 27 | 38 | 54.5 |
Alabama | 14 | 19 | 33 | 54 |
West Virginia | 10 | 28 | 38 | 53 |
Clemson | 14 | 17 | 31 | 52 |
North Carolina | 8 | 31 | 39 | 51 |
Florida State | 10 | 26 | 36 | 51 |
Michigan | 10 | 26 | 36 | 51 |
Southern California | 10 | 26 | 36 | 51 |
Kentucky | 7 | 32 | 39 | 49.5 |
Florida | 9 | 27 | 36 | 49.5 |
Western Michigan | 13 | 16 | 29 | 48.5 |
Louisville | 9 | 25 | 34 | 47.5 |
Troy | 10 | 22 | 32 | 47 |
Virginia Tech | 10 | 22 | 32 | 47 |
Minnesota | 9 | 24 | 33 | 46.5 |
San Diego State | 11 | 19 | 30 | 46.5 |
Louisiana Tech | 9 | 23 | 32 | 45.5 |
Boise State | 10 | 20 | 30 | 45 |
Oklahoma State | 10 | 20 | 30 | 45 |
Baylor | 7 | 27 | 34 | 44.5 |
Brigham Young | 9 | 22 | 31 | 44.5 |
Ohio State | 11 | 17 | 28 | 44.5 |
Colorado | 10 | 19 | 29 | 44 |
Old Dominion | 10 | 19 | 29 | 44 |
It’s pretty impressive that WVU is up there as well. To me, anything on here above 40 is good and anything above 50 is elite. Oklahoma State fell between those two numbers which I think describes how we felt about football/basketball this time around — not elite, but still pretty dang good.
