Oklahoma State Special Teams Coach Leaves for Toledo, Gundy Takes Over

Oklahoma State’s special teams coach Robby Discher has headed to Toledo to become a full-time assistant which, as he reminded Mike Gundy recently, he was not at OSU. Not even close. That’s why it was a no-brainer that he take the Toledo position and be paid like a full-time employee instead of a GA (which is what he was in Stillwater). Mike Gundy even predicted it in August.

It’s likely Discher continues to boost his coaching resume in 2015 as the high number of freshmen special teamers from a season ago return with valuable experience. Gundy added it’s only a matter of time before Discher becomes a full-time assistant at the highest level — with a full-time paycheck, of course.

Then he reiterated the sentiment on Friday while also lamenting the process. Gundy was talking about Mike Yurcich here, but he might as well have been talking about Discher.

“I want those guys to become head coaches,” Gundy said. “I want guys to leave our staff and be coordinators. But it’s a pain in the rear for us to try and change the formula (this late). If it ever happened, you’d want it to happen after the bowl. But it never does. Everybody wants a coach and they want him right now. I’d rather it be in January.”

The solution for Gundy? He’s taking over special teams for the Sugar Bowl.

But Discher’s move has a ripple effect as the Cowboys prepare to face Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day. Gundy needed to appoint a special-teams coordinator. He introduced him on Friday.

“You’re looking at him right now,” Gundy said. “Which is fine, I enjoy that. Robby and I worked together. He was obviously the leader and he let me fill in some.”

There’s no telling what kind of sorcery we’re going to see in New Orleans come New Year’s Day.
