Where Oklahoma State’s 2017 Recruiting Class Finished Nationally

Published

on

Oklahoma State’s 2017 recruiting class is in the books with national signing day in the books. Twenty-one members, five of which are early enrollees, are now officially Cowboys. To go full coach cliché: they filled needs at key positions, all of them come from good mommies and daddies, and it’s an exciting time for Oklahoma State football.

With the class all but finished (except one more spot yet to be filled), where did the class finish in the recruiting rankings? Here’s a look at the Big 12 standings:

After being ranked second in the Big 12 with less than a month before signing day, Texas and TCU had a late surge on the recruiting trail to overtake the Cowboys, and Baylor’s Matt Rhule went from one commitment to 27 in just a two-month span.

As you can see, OSU had 21 total signees — but the rankings give more weight to schools with higher-rated prospects (obviously). Texas signed just 18 prospects, however seven of those were considered 4-star recruits. And TCU signed the same number of players as OSU, but they signed four 4-star prospects (and three 2-stars! What are you doing, Gary Patterson?!)

OSU slipped to 38th overall in in the national standings.

Here is how OSU has finished since 2011 in the Big 12 arms race:

  • 2011: 4th
  • 2012: 6th
  • 2013: 4th
  • 2014: 4th
  • 2015: 6th
  • 2016: 6th
  • 2017: 4th

And nationally? It’s basically more of the same.

  • 2011: 25th
  • 2012: 33rd
  • 2013: 30th
  • 2014: 28th
  • 2015: 39th
  • 2016: 44th
  • 2017: 38th

Oklahoma State’s recruiting for its next class generally picks up in the spring ahead of signing day (11 months or so in advance). But the good news is that OSU has the foundation for a solid 2018 class. Four-star quarterback Spencer Sanders is in the fold, as is inside linebacker Blake Barron. That’s two more commitment than OSU had at this time last year.

Having a commitment at the quarterback position set is key in building out the class. So with that already set, look for OSU to try and gather some recruiting momentum over the spring as they prepare for what could be one if its best recruiting classes if they can continue the early momentum.
