Oklahoma State’s Offense Shaping Up To Be One of Best In Gundy Era

Published

You ready for this, Mike Yurcich haters? I don’t think you are. After a ridiculously-efficient day against Texas Tech, Oklahoma State now has the 16th-most efficient offense in the country according to our points-per-drive numbers. Let’s dive in to the data.

Offensive PPD

Oklahoma State moved up after posting 3.75 points per drive against Texas Tech on Saturday. It surged ahead of Baylor and could end up as a top three offense in the Big 12 before the year is over.

“I thought we had a good performance,” said center Brad Lundblade of OSU’s outing against Texas Tech. “There were definitely times that we could have been better but the defense was able to put us in a position where we could pretty much maintain the lead throughout the game.

“We knew Texas Tech was going to put up points and we knew as an offense we would have to match that. I feel like we were able to do that so it was a good performance.”

Growth this season

OSU has maintained its Big 12 surge, getting more and more efficient nearly every week since the Baylor game. Here is a look at Oklahoma State’s overall PPD numbers for the year after each game.

That might go down this week as TCU has one of the better defenses in the conference, but it’s still a pretty impressive run through the conference slate.

Gundy era

What about OSU’s yearly numbers as an offense since 2007 (this is as far back as I could find them).

*whispers* Having a NFL quarterback might matter. This number could obviously go down over the next three games, but OSU is looking at posting its first 3+ PPD number since 2012 when it posted 3.01. Impressive.

Defensive PPD

Now a look at Big 12 defenses.

Poor Tech. OU’s number continues to fall and is now in the OSU-UT-KSU-OSU range. I suspect Baylor will be there shortly as well. West Virginia, man. West Virginia is good at defense. So is TCU. I have many concerns.

Obviously all of these numbers are not opponent-adjusted so you’ll see them all even out as the Big 12 schedule concludes. OSU still has two tough road games and a bowl game to either surge or fall flat. But Oklahoma State, despite some of the narratives, is currently one of the best offenses in the league (and the country). And it has a chance to be one of the best Mike Gundy has ever had.
