This Chart Shows OSU Was One of The Two Best Big 12 Athletic Departments Last Year

I’m not talking about football. And Lord knows I’m not talking about basketball. No, the Waco Tribune put together this little chart ranking the Big 12 schools by all sports, not just the revenue-generating ones. Here’s an explanation.

For sports in which standings are kept, points are based on conference finish and number of teams competing (10 for first, nine for second, etc., in 10-team sports; six for first, five for second in six-team sports, and so on). In other sports, points are based on finish in conference tournaments or meets.

There were also bonus points doled out (OSU baseball got two for its NCAA tournament berth and one for its super regional appearance). You can read more about the methodology here.

But no matter the formula, it’s pretty clear OSU had an historically great school year in 2015-16. In fact, only Texas, OU and OSU scored at least 100 points according to this formula. Here’s a look at every Big 12 school.

Look at that. Of those top three teams, OSU was second-best in the big three sports of baseball, basketball and football just behind OU. Throw in golf, track, wrestling and cross country and OSU finished just ahead of OU in men’s athletics. Then there was women’s golf, women’s tennis and women’s cross country. Pretty heady stuff.

Former OSU women’s tennis coach Betty Edgley agreed.

“I was very, very pleased,” Edgley told the Tulsa World of the women’s tennis run to the national title. “I’ve watched them some this year and they really got some great, great kids there and their coaches I know have done a great job. And in fact, I’ve heard from a lot of people that I know across the country and they were very pleased that OSU has really come up in tennis.”

OSU has really come up in a lot of sports. This chart proves it. What makes it even more impressive is that OU and Texas outspend Oklahoma State by a LOTAnd Mike Holder remains wildly underrated as an athletic director.
