The Reload: More on Adrian Wolford, New Offensive Line Offers, In-state Recruiting

After a brief recess last week, The Reload is back to catch you up to speed on events surrounding Oklahoma State recruiting with an ear to the ground on what to expect in the near future.

Because of the sheer amount of information, I’ll be breaking down The Reload into two editions just for today: Football and basketball. I’ll have a ton of hoops related recruiting information up on the site later today. For now, sink your teeth into some juicy gridiron related info.

Cowboys lose pledge to Texas A&M

After several unofficial visits to College Station, offensive lineman Adrian Wolford of Meeker, Okla., flipped his commitment from Oklahoma State to Texas A&M last week, citing a chance to play in the SEC as one of the biggest factors in his decision.

“I have changed my commitment and decided to play football for Texas A&M,” he posted on twitter. “I am thankful to Coach Mike Gundy and Coach Adkins from OSU, but I feel the best thing for me and my future rests in the SEC. I look forward to playing for Coach Sumlin and Coach Turner for the Aggies.”

I mentioned recently that Wolford could in fact be wavering on his commitment, after a trip to College Station made a big impression on him. Wolford committed earlier this year and A&M offered just weeks after, so you can’t fault him for changing his mind, after all verbal pledges are non-binding. But it’s a big blow to the 2017 class who will have to look elsewhere to try and bring in talent of Wolford’s quality.

Offensive line is still a huge priority moving forward and with the decision from Wolford, the 2017 class is now without a commitment at offensive line. The coaching staff is already making moves to make ground for the decommitment. We’ll get into that next.

New Offensive Line Offers

Oklahoma State made several offers out the door last week, but first lets get to the new offensive line offers. The first went out to 2018 offensive tackle Colten Blanton of Cypress Ranch, Texas. Blanton is an elite 6-foot-6, 285-pound prospect with offers from Alabama, OU, A&M, and others. This one may be a reach at the moment but with recruitment these days, most kids don’t consider they’re being recruited unless they hold an offer. So at the least OSU is throwing their hat in the ring with Blanton, so to speak.

The other offensive line offer that went out landed in the hands of 2017 offensive tackle Matthew Huhn from the San Antonio area. The 6-7 tackle is another elite prospect with offers from Michigan, Baylor, Houston, and 25 others. With Wolford moving on to A&M, the Cowboys can now begin a pursuit of other elite offensive lineman, and Huhn fits that mold.

He’s a tough, physical tackle who has excellent mobility and length who appears to be on his way to growing into his huge frame. Coach Adkins likes his tackles tall and lengthy, and Huhn fits the bill for someone who could develop into a big-time player at the next level.

Other Football Offers

Oklahoma State gained a commitment at defensive end in Nelson Mbanasor last week, and they’re looking to add an in-state talent on top of that, too. [You can read more on Nelson Mbanasor’s decision to commit here]. The coaching staff extended a scholarship offer to 2017 end Brock Martin of Oolagah, Okla.

Martin’s recruitment has skyrocketed over the last few months, with offers from Baylor, K-State, Tulsa, and OSU most notably. He’s a 6-foot-3, 210-pound prospect.

Another in-state offer that went out this week was to 2019 tight end / defensive end Grayson Boomer of Collinsville. Boomer is a 6-foot-5, 230-pound prospect who already has offers from OSU, Iowa State, Nebraska and Texas Tech. Despite the fact that he is a big-time tight end, I think Boomer projects better at defensive end at the next level.

The utilization of the Cowboy back has increased over the last year following the hire of Jason McEndoo, but pass-rushing in college football is a premium and Boomer, who is already a big-time prospect coming off his freshman year, could definitely become a valuable pass rusher at the next level. And that position in Stillwater, at least in the past, can be put to better use than an effective tight end.

Prospect to keep an eye on

Marcus Arroyo has cleaned up shop in the 2017 cycle with commitments at running back from two elite stars: JD King and Chuba Hubbard. And another prospect may be a Cowboy soon. Travis Etienne Jr., a 5-11, 200-pound prospect from Jennings, LA, has long been on the Cowboy radar and is still in constant communication with the staff. Etienne has basically his choice of school at the next level.

But Arroyo, who has been an ACE recruiter, could be closing in on yet another prize. Keep an eye on Etienne, who recently named OSU in his top 10. He has been open about his desire to play in the SEC, however the chance to potentially be a day-one competitor in the Big 12 could play a big factor in his final decision, too.
