Report: LSU Considering Mike Gundy for Head Coach Position

Published

According to a report from The Times-Picayunne, Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy is being considered for the head coaching position to replace Les Miles in Baton Rouge.

The report states that Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher, and interim head coach Ed Orgeron have emerged as “strong candidates,” citing sources with knowledge of the coaching search.

“Jimbo was [athletic director] Joe [Alleva’s] guy from the beginning, and I just don’t see him passing on hiring him,” the report states. Jimbo’s buyout from Florida State would reportedly be $5 million if he were to leave before the 2017 football season.

Here’s more from the report on Mike Gundy:

Other names being considered by LSU are North Carolina coach Larry Fedora, Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy and Houston coach Tom Herman. Fedora’s reps have been contacted by LSU, according to sources.

Fedora, a former offensive coordinator at OSU, has had several successful seasons at North Carolina as head coach. And Herman has been the hot name on the market since taking over at Houston last season.

Mike Gundy’s name seems to always bubble up this time of year for head coaching jobs, but it seems to me that he may be further down the list than what it sounds. Either because Gundy isn’t interested, or LSU has other targets.

Regardless, something tells me Mike Gundy won’t be taking the bye week after TCU looking for real estate in Baton Rouge.
