Roundtable: Where Will OSU Players End Up in the NFL Draft?

Published

on

We tossed together a late roundtable on the NFL Draft and what we think it holds for Oklahoma State’s players. The Draft starts tonight at 7 p.m. Let’s jump right in.

Kyle Porter

Let’s start with this — if you had to bet your life on it, which OSU player will be the first one picked and what round will he go?

Thomas Fleming

Vincent Taylor in the 4th or 5th round

Kyle Cox

Vincent Taylor in the 4th round. I think there is a definite conference bias for defenders in the Big 12. He could be a value pick for someone there.

Sam Aldrich

I’m gonna say VT in the 5th. A steal, by the way. Why didn’t he come back again? ?

Fleming

^very good question

Cox

I hope I don’t have to bet my life based on the decisions that some NFL front offices make.

Fleming

Like when the Jags drafted a punter in the third round.

Porter

I didn’t realize VT is already 23. Not sure there’s a lot left to prove there from an age or development standpoint. I’m going to say Taylor in the 4th round although I think Cox’s note on Big 12 defensive bias is intriguing. OK, here’s one. Where would you most like to see Chris Carson end up and why?

Fleming

Not the browns.

Aldrich

Give me Carson in the green and gold behind Lane Taylor please. He’d crush as a third down back in that system. #GoPackGo

Fleming

If Lacy weren’t at the Seahawks I’d say them. I agree with GB though. The Colts need a back.

Cox

Anywhere really. I think he has the physical tools to play at the next level. I saw one mock had him going to Kansas City which is interesting. Maybe my Niners where he could add some depth. I’m still curious to see how/if his game translates to the next level.

Fleming

Gore is old and their secondary is too poor for them not to draft corners early. What if they picked up Carson in the 6th?

Aldrich

I’d love that selfishly as a Chiefs fan. Carson/Tyreek. ?

Cox

Indy’s OL is horrible.

Fleming

He would also fit the Giants. I’m thinking who would be a good fit for him schematically. He’s not exactly a picture-perfect shifty, one-cut zone back.

Porter

Green Bay would be great. He would punish in the tundra. What about Jordan Sterns — does he get drafted, and how long does his NFL career last?

Cox

Carson has the vert to do the Lambeau leap.

Fleming

Probably not but I bet he gets invites. Maybe he can get on a roster full-time in one or two years.

Cox

I’d say Sterns gets signed as a free agent and plays for 6-8 years. He could fit in nicely as a rotation safety. 1. B12 bias 2. H’s not a freak athlete.

Aldrich

Yeah I think he gets picked up late and hangs on a few years in the league. Certainly plays with NFL physicality.

Porter

I agree. I think Sterns has a nice NFL career! I’m wildly biased and not even close to somebody who understands what NFL people look for, but I think Sterns is a really great college player who can have a role in the NFL. I’ll say he plays five years.

Aldrich

Also, he’s a friend of the blog ?

Cox

We need to get an exclusive.

Fleming

I do think that, from some of the scouting reports I’ve read, people see him as a one-trick pony. He’s not just a hitter. Hopefully front offices see that.

Cox

I think the passing offenses in this league give a lot of DBs a bad rap on giving up plays.

Fleming

Do you think that there are a good amount of front offices that are stupid enough to discount players because of the conference they’re in?

Cox

I think a lot of the “experts” don’t watch as much tape as they purport? Sterns’ big knock on one site was on him getting burned deep. I’ve never seen him that way. Everyone does at some point and if you’re guarding one of three Baylor receivers as a safety, it’s going to happen. Of course, the NFL has bigger, better, faster guys.

Porter

I don’t know about that, but I do think it’s difficult to properly evaluate players across conferences. I don’t necessarily think that’s stupidity. I just think it’s hard.

Aldrich

On the flip side, I think a similar corner or safety that played in the SEC does probably get more love.

Cox

Another flip side, Sterns got praised for his run support but he had to backup for a DL that left something to be desired in stopping the ground game at times.

Aldrich

Not everyone had the opportunity to prepare for NFL speed like Big 10 prospects, after all * ducks *

Porter

Haha.

Cox

Blake Jarwin > O.J. Howard

Porter

OK last one — make a bold prediction for this weekend that doesn’t have to include an OSU player. Just anything crazy. And don’t be boring and pick “a SEC lineman will have photos of himself wearing a bong mask released and it will legitimately affect the draft and then he will throw his university under the bus and say people got paid” again. That’s old.

Fleming

Bengals draft Mixon in fourth round or earlier.

Cox

The Cowboys will draft Pat Mahomes. I don’t know how crazy that is.

Aldrich

I’m gonna say that someone takes a chance on Joe Mixon in the second and his NFL career blows away Fournette’s, who goes top 5.

Cox

At least two teams will reach way too far for a QB and further set back their franchise.

Porter

We didn’t even talk about Jhajuan Seales, Jordan Burton and Ashton Lampkin. Anything happening for them?

Aldrich

I don’t think so. Seales’ pro day was impressive though, so we’ll see.

Cox

They will all get a chance to work out with a team. Burton may be intriguing with his Pro Day numbers. Seales might actually get drafted for his.

Fleming

I’m really rooting for Seales. The man (apparently) runs a sub-4.4 40 time and has impressive ball skills. And he’s physical.

Porter

Same. He’s underrated. And a big hitter. Enjoy the show.
