Seth Jacobs: ‘I Was Put on This Earth to Do More than Just Hit People’
Seth Jacobs’ recent retirement was a sobering reminder of what college football players endure to entertain us and propel themselves towards the alluring payday of the NFL.
Mark Cooper wrote about this very thing as he recently interviewed Jacobs. The former Cowboy linebacker offered up this as justification for his decision to retire (not that he needed any at all).
“I just really thought about it and every day at practice, when my neck was bothering me or my shoulder would be bothering me and I’m still in the training room for this, that and the other, I just kind of came to the realization that I was put on this earth to do more than just hit people,” Jacobs told the Tulsa World.
Then this.
There were times when he would fall asleep on his back and couldn’t use his arms when he woke up. He would have to roll his body onto his stomach without using his arms.
Yikes. I’m glad for Jacobs to have moved on after reading about his physical tribulations. He graduated in three years, and as Mike Gundy said, the future without football is bright.
“He’s going to move on with his life, go to graduate school,” Gundy told the Oklahoman. “He’s a smart kid.
You should go read the entire piece. It’s really good.
