Since Mike Gundy Took Over, OSU and OU Have Been The Two Winningest Big 12 Teams

Berry Tramel wrote splendidly about how Oklahoma State has ascended the Big 12 and national food chain since Mike Gundy took office in Stillwater, OK.

The Cowboy mantra [in 1996] had to be, just reach Texas Tech’s level. Just get as good as the consistently competitive Red Raiders. And somewhere in the 2000s, that happened. Then OSU set its sights on Texas A&M. Get as good as the occasionally great Aggies. And that happened, too. Now, of course, the Cowboys have zipped past even Texas. OSU has won five of the last seven against the Longhorns. Just once since 2009 has UT has finished ahead of the Cowboys in the Big 12 standings. [NewsOK]

But do you guys realize just how good it has actually been?

With TCU’s win over Texas last weekend, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma re now the winningest teams in the Big 12 since 2005 (when Gundy took over) excluding TCU and West Virginia (which have only been in the league for four years). That’s preposterous.

Here is a look at overall records of current Big 12 teams while in the Big 12 since 2005. They are ranked by winning percentage.

I mean, just look at that. Over the last decade plus, Oklahoma State has been better than the University of Texas at football. The University. Of. Texas. The rest of the schools that have been in the league for that entire period of time aren’t even close.

Of course you would rather be Texas and have played for two titles in that timespan. But still. I’m not necessarily saying OSU has been one of the two best programs (even Baylor would have a case to make there), but it has been one of the two most consistent.

Even if you look at Big 12-only games, OSU is still right there. Here are the top three:

  • OU: 83-22 (79%)
  • Texas: 66-38 (63.5%)
  • Oklahoma State: 63-38 (62.4%)

That’s what makes next weekend even more special. The conference championships have not been split as evenly as OSU fans would like, although I’d like to point out we are a dropped Justin Gilbert INT in 2013 from that margin being 5-2 instead of 5-1. The former sounds a lot more palatable than the latter.

Either way, December 3 in Norman will be a showcase of the two premiere programs in the Big 12 which is a pretty normal thing to say about Oklahoma and a pretty crazy (and amazing) thing to say about Oklahoma State.
