Spring Football Notebook: Wide Receiver Group Shining

James Washington is a robot.

This should not come as news, but alas, it bears mentioning again. Washington was called to demonstrate how to catch with his finger tips, not his palms. It was about the most normal thing receivers coach Kasey Dunn went through Wednesday.

But let’s talk about what else happened at the Cowboys’ practice:

  • The Oklahoma State football team rolls with oldies early in practice. I found this interesting. Basketball and softball (?) go with rap. Baseball is mostly country. But I figured football would go with something with a little more edge.
  • Gundy was later than usual for his press conference before practice. He said he forgot it was Wednesday.
  • When Ramon Richards was coming into the training center, he was freestyling with newly changed defensive tackle Trey Carter. Assistant media director Sean Maguire told him he needed to talk with some reporters. Richards said OK and continued freestyling.

  • As kicker Matt Ammendola walked in, OSU sideline reporter Robert Allen told him he was starting to look a little more like punter Zach Sinor. He clarified and said he was talking about his arms.
    • Ammendola said he was relieved because he thought Allen was talking about his gut.
  • The media got to talk with a real life cornerback, Darius Curry, about the position’s growth this spring.

  • Also talked with sophomore corner Madre Harper, who scored a touchdown the instant he touched a football in his first game at OSU.

  • All the running backs participating in full spring practice look identical.
    • Jeff Carr: 5-foot-7, 190 pounds
    • Jakeem Johnson: 5-9, 190
    • Ja’Ron Wilson: 5-10, 225 (doesn’t look it)
    • La’Darren Brown: 5-9, 193 (yes, literally identical to Brown)
    • Although he isn’t full-go, Justice Hill: 5-10, 185
  • Running backs coach Josh Wozniak was teaching them how to do belly flops.
  • Watching The President catch a football is classifiable art.
  • As is watching Mason Rudolph’s deep out.
  • Some talk about the depth at linebacker this year.
  • Gundy said cowboy back Britton Abbott is twice the player he was at this time last year.
  • Also, he said he plans to return to Okeene for some more rattlesnake huntin’ later this month. Heard the biggin’s were out a couple of days ago. He said he keeps up with Wild Bill and the gang out there through a mutual friend. Man, Gundy’s got those connections.
