Texas Still Has No Idea What to Do at Quarterback

PFB’s Sam Aldrich has been previewing Big 12 quarterback play for this upcoming season. Part 1 is here, and Part 2 is here. It’s been a fun read and a good reminder of who is playing QB in this conference. It also reminded me of something hilarious I read the other day about Texas.

Now, I’m sort of reticent about going all in on making fun of Texas as a football program because we are a Deshaun Watson or J.T. Barrett from Texas being truly a terrifying force once again, but I just cannot help myself for the time being.

There was a report on Scout the other day that even though Charlie Strong said one thing at Big 12 media days, he didn’t actually mean it. This essentially sums up the post-Colt McCoy QB situation at Texas. Here it is.

The first week of camp in Austin is done, and it was a bit of a mixed bag. After saying at Big 12 Football Media Days he wanted to name a starting quarterback early in camp, Charlie Strong said after Saturday’s scrimmage there is no timetable to name a starter between senior Tyrone Swoopes and freshman Shane Buechele. “We don’t want Notre Dame to know,” Strong said, laughing. Strong emphasized both QBs will play against Notre Dame. “They’ll both get a chance,” he said.

Sometimes it feels like Chuck is just out here to make our resident satirist Josiah Meints’ job easier.

Not that Notre Dame is doing it any differently.

Texas continues to amuse me. They think they’re still a top 10 team annually, and yet I could probably play QB for them (if I wasn’t playing RB for them). Strong has consistently chirped in his time in Austin that his recruiting classes will get stronger as time goes on and the Horns will be back which is fine as long as you have a great QB1 (as Mike Gundy has pointed out and we were all reminded of in 2014).

Texas (somehow) still doesn’t.

Of course OSU also has not beaten Texas at home since I was in middle school (1997) so I should probably settle down.
