The 12 Best Quotes from Oklahoma State’s Win Over TCU

Oklahoma State lit up AP No. 5 TCU on Saturday afternoon in Boone Pickens Stadium. Here’s what everyone was saying afterwards.

1. Mike Gundy on how he got OSU ready

“I’m really proud of our team. I’m proud of our coaches, and I thought the defensive staff did a tremendous job in their game plan. The players bought in, and we reduced their reps in practice this week to try and keep them fresh. It worked for us. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. I’m just really proud of the guys for being able to run them down some and make some plays.”

2. Gundy on how they stopped Trevone Boykin

“I had confidence in our defense’s ability to make plays. We played base defense and ran to the football. There wasn’t anything special about what we did, other than some minor things Xs and Os-wise. I used the Kevin Durant example, the one where you don’t let him get to 50 points, just let him get to 25. That’s what they did tonight.”

3. Glenn Spencer being the best

“I want someone to look at the stats and tell me we had a bad game so that I can laugh it off. For these guys, this was outstanding, and I’m so proud of them. It was a huge night. There were 110 gradeable snaps so they probably played 120 when you take off penalties and such. Those guys are exhausted.”

4. Spencer on how he schemed against TCU

“That’s another thing people don’t understand looking at that yardage is that the only way for us to get beat in that game was for them to throw over the top of us. The only way for us to lose it was for me to play it like that time Michael Hunter got beat – that was a bad call. He was in press and by himself. At that point in the game, I kicked myself in the tail. I should’ve protected those guys more because that was the only way we were going to lose that game.”

5. Mike Yurcich on the unintended consequence of James Washington’s performance

“The thing is, if they double cover him, somebody else has single coverage and we said earlier in the week, we have to find the single coverage matchups and throw to the one-on-one. Our guys are going to win those a majority of the time. That’s where we have to go with the ball.”

6. Chad Whitener on not letting down

“We’re going to celebrate as much as we can tonight, but we’re going to come back healthy tomorrow and we just have to win next week. We have to get to 10-0.”

7. James Washington on math

“Coming into the game I just thought to myself that I have to do my 111%. I really just came in and tried to do what I could do to help the team win.”

8. Trevone Boykin on OSU

“You’re not going to come into an environment like this and have four turnovers and expect to win a game. We played a great football team, and Coach Gundy is a great coach so props to those guys.”

9. Gundy on getting to next week

10. Zach Sinor on BPS

“It was loud. It was unbelievable. I’ve never been a part of a college football game that was that loud. It was loud at West Virginia a few weeks ago, but this was a lot louder than WVU.”

11. Gary Patterson on getting smoked

“First off, you have to give Coach Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys a lot of credit. They kicked our butts. You can’t give up big plays, and you can’t turn the ball over. If you do that, you’re not going to win big ballgames. They had 30 plays and 28 points in the first half. We fought our ways back into it. Basically, the defense gave up one touchdown in the second half, but it was too late. You have to score and get yourself back into things. I give them all the credit.”

12. Patterson on whether he was surprised OSU scored so much

“Nope. They scored 70 last week. I wasn’t surprised by any of it, and I knew they were going to keep going at us. I would’ve done the same thing they did. That’s their job. They scored and they tried to double-reverse pass, and when you play our offense you need to keep going until there’s no time left. I would do the same thing.”
