Three Things We Learned About Oklahoma State In Week 1

Published

on

This will be the leanest week (probably) for this post, but Kyle and Kyle take a look back at everything we learned in Saturday’s contest. Let’s hit it.

Kyle Porter

1. QB1 is more mobile. Mason Rudolph has gotten a lot bigger and yet a lot thinner at the same time which makes for a more mobile (but hopefully still as accurate) signal-caller. His scrambling abilities in Week 1 did nothing do dissuade me from screaming his potential from the rooftops.

This is me yelling MASON RUDOLPH IS THE BEST QB IN THE BIG 12!

2. Justice Hill is a baller. I apologize for not believing in a true freshman, but the kid can play some football. We will know more in a few weeks, but his explosiveness and field awareness (Joe Randle-like even?) have been missing from OSU’s backfield for the last few years. I continue to point to next season as OSU’s big time CFP push with Rudolph as a senior, and this dude is not hurting that cause.

3. Mike Gundy wears camo Oakleys. NOTHING says I’m a millionaire from Oklahoma quite like camo Oakleys wrapped around a mullet with a big boy suit for a walk to a game where your team is literally giving the other school $400,000 to pound them for four hours. What a world.

1. Taylor Cornelius follows the BYOG guidelines. I ran to the restroom on Saturday and come back to the couch to realize that Taylor Cornelius went full Sam Bradford in week 1 against an FCS opponent.

The Oil Baron finished the game as the third leading rusher with 28 yards ahead of Rennie Childs and Chris Carson, and this type of play goes a long ways to winning over your teammates and the fans:

2. Barry J. Sanders has some impressive wiggle. The only punt return of the game was Barry J.’s 57-yarder that went all the way down to the one-yard line. Jalen McCleskey is still the guy at punt return, but Barry J. showed he could handle and probably deserves more reps back there as well. Having two playmakers is a good problem to have, and if he continues to do stuff like this he could be slated for a bigger role moving forward:

3. Defensive tackle depth is a #blessing. SE Louisiana finished the game with just shy of 100 rushing yards on the day. And there was no shortage of interior lineman for Joe Bob Clements and Glenn Spencer to roll out on Saturday to develop and audition. DeQuinton Osborne, OSU’s late addition to the roster this summer, rolled on the field at the end of the second quarter and made a case for some extra playing time with a monstrous sack and flex. Being three-deep at defensive tackle will be key to stopping the run in Big 12 play, and the depth showed to be a major strength of a pretty nasty defense in the opener.
