Vincent Taylor is Coming Home for Sugar Bowl, Gundy is Excited

Oklahoma State is headed to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans which means defensive tackle Vincent Taylor is headed home … sort of. Taylor was originally from New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina displaced him and his family to San Antonio.

“Me and my brother, we didn’t want for nothing in New Orleans,” Taylor told the O’Colly earlier this year. “We just kind of had it made. …Then, just growing up and playing football, I kind of stayed out of trouble. Everything was pretty good. Even though I was young at the time, I remember a lot of things.”

Then a lot of not good things after the hurricane rocked the city.

His father Victor Sr. noted that ultimately Katrina was good for their family.

“You learned from that and you’re moving on from that. You don’t look back. You never forget that you’ve seen dead bodies floating in the water. You’ve seen cars being set on fire. People vandalizing, shooting each other. If that hurricane wouldn’t have hit, do we know if Vincent would have been at Oklahoma State? Do we know if our lives would be as good as they are today? We would never know. But we know now because the hurricane hit.”

Emmanuel Ogbah said Taylor is the first person he thought of when OSU found out where it was headed.

“(He) was actually the first person I called,” Ogbah told the Oklahoman. He was very excited. He said, ‘I get to go back home.’ It was really a great moment for him.”

That’s pretty cool.

“I was excited for our players and coaches and fans that we made it into the Sugar Bowl,” Mike Gundy told the Tulsa World. “Ten bowls in a row is special for Oklahoma State University. Our fans and players and coaching staff have come to expect being in a bowl game, and it’s been a tremendous impact on our football program and our university from a recruiting standpoint.

“And now being in such a prestigious bowl as the Sugar Bowl, it is a really great lift for our football players.”Such a historic bowl. We have traditionally watched that game at my house or wherever we were at a bowl site. So we’re very, very excited about being there.”

Nobody more so than Vincent Taylor.
