What’s The Best Year In School History?

How about this stat: the Associated Press has been ranking football and basketball teams in its weekly Top 25 poll since 1949. This school year (2012-2013) marks only the fifth time in school history OSU has been ranked at one point in the season in both polls.

This is stunning to me. Fans are a little bummed about football being 7-4 and still way skeptical about a 5-0 hoops squad and yet you could make the argument that this is the third best combined season for both since 1949!

The flip side of that is that the basketball season needs to play out a lot more, but for the data we currently have this ranks as an all-time football/hoops campaign.

I’d also like to take a moment for that 1945-46 season when OSU reached as high as 5th in the football polls and won it all in hoops. Sadly the AP didn’t have a hoops poll at that time, but that was decidedly the best football/hoops season OSU has ever had.

Finishing the season at (what would have been) #1 in basketball plus a #5 ranking in football for a total of 6?

And I bet they even filled up Gallagher Hall!
