Who Will Back Up Mason Rudolph in 2016?

Oklahoma State heads into 2016 with a clear-cut No. 1 at quarterback for the second straight season in Mason Rudolph. Only this time, No. 4 is out of the picture hunting Frogs in Fort Worth. Which leaves a slight void at a position that was one of strength from last year. So who will back up Mason Rudolph in 2016?

Offensive coordinator touched on that briefly after practice recently. “Mason’s getting all the reps with the ones, obviously,” said Yurcich. “Then we’re making it 50-50 with the twos. [John] Kolar is rolling in with Taylor [Cornelius] and those guys are battling it out for the backup position.”

Gundy hit on the same topic recently at his pre-spring presser, and he seems to have a pretty open mind about who will play QB2 and the role they might have in the offense.

“We’re going to look into it a little bit [on a guy filling in for J.W. Walsh’s role]. I don’t know if we’re as far along with J.W.’s role, but Kolar and Taylor are here and they’ve had good offseasons. They’ll get plenty of reps this spring before we bring in any of the new players (cue Keondre Wudtee.) But it’s obviously hard to tell with those guys cause they’re not here yet.”

It’s easy to focus in on guys who are in spring camp for obvious reasons. They’re literally the only options Mike and Mike have available this spring. But it’s important to keep in mind Oklahoma State’s recent signee Keondre Wudtee. I think he has the potential to turn some serious heads once he arrives on campus. He’ll be on campus this summer, and if he can grasp some of the main concepts of the offense early in his tenure, I think there’s a fairly legitimate shot that the Bossier City standout could wind up playing QB2 by the time fall rolls around.
