O-Line Development

The starters may be split up in the game but seeing how they perform on Saturday will be telling:

How does the offensive line look under new coach Josh Henson?

The offensive line has been a wreck for years. Multiple coaches and sub-par recruiting has really been the thorn in the side of the Cowboys for the last four seasons. In 2016, the line showed progress over the 2015 campaign, finally making room for a running game and keeping Rudolph mostly upright and in the pocket. But after another poor showing on the recruiting trail, offensive line coach Greg Adkins was let go. His replacement, Josh Henson, is an OSU guy, has served as an offensive coordinator at the FBS level, and is known to be an amazing recruiter.

While all that is probably great news for the future, how will the line respond to yet another coaching change? Keeping the running lanes open and Rudolph comfortable are paramount in what could be a special season. Like the cornerback spot, a grad transfer named Aaron Cochran from Cal could boost the talent this summer. Landing an experienced started to replace Victor Salako at left tackle would be a great first year plus for Henson. [Heartland College Sports]

With the right personnel, we don’t really have any reason to assume the trend won’t continue to be upward. A coaching change is a coaching change but Henson’s familiarity with the program could minimize that. Early sound bytes point toward increased aggression in the coaching style but should be interesting to watch on Saturday.

Sutton Release Details

More came to the surface yesterday on why Scott Sutton was released:

A source confirmed to the Tulsa World that Sutton’s release hinged on the employment of his brother, Sean Sutton. Former ORU President Mark Rutland agreed to add Sean Sutton to Scott’s staff, but current President Billy Wilson would not agree to an extension of that agreement.

The source also revealed that Scott Sutton was given a choice to get rid of Sean Sutton and stay, but Scott refused and both were released. [TulsaWorld]

I won’t pretend to be privy to internal politics at ORU but unfortunately there has to be more to the story. Sean clearly has had his act together, dubbed recruiter of the year in 2005 (Gerald Green, Byron Eaton, Rod Flemings, etc.) and was at least initially unpaid. The Sports Animal was lit up yesterday with discussions about specific standards that ORU was imposing on recruits (faith-based and lack of tattoos), must have played a part as well.

Not to draw too much attention to the situation but a perplexing development to those near and dear to the situation.

OSU and NCAA Notes

A pair of five run innings pushed Central Arkansas ahead of the Cowboys yesterday….UT’s freshman big man declared for the draft (will hire agent)….Cowboy Caravan dates set…..Maryland president thinks North Carolina deserves death penalty (curious to hear his thoughts on recent Big 12 misbehavior)….Things don’t look great for Tubby Smith at Memphis….OSU Tennis swept the players of the week awards

Jawun was just elite off the PnR. If he can get shots off and continue to progress in his three point shot, his pick and roll game will fit like a glove in the NBA.

Sweatpants Bowl is headed more towards the outdoor recreation side now.

It’s April and I’d give most anything for it to be another month that starts with an A.
