More Ways To Look At Gundy’s 94 Wins

Published

on

Yesterday I wrote about all 94 of Mike Gundy’s wins at Oklahoma State and how we can look at them. After that, in very Berry Tramel-esque fashion, I got an email from reader Blake Gamble who did a little research of his own. I asked if I could post what he wrote because I found it interesting and needed some #content for PGA Championship week wanted to comment on it.

Here’s Blake:

I set the range to 2005-2015 but excluded the bowl games. I feel that the long layoff, exiting seniors, players looking ahead to the NFL Draft and surge in suspended players tends to create fairly odd game outcomes in these games. They are where coaches tend to make themselves some serious money for future contracts, but truly they are outliers.

That said, Gundy is 88-43 in 11 seasons… or almost exactly an average of 8-4 per year, which is a .672 Win Percentage. So here are the big swings above and below that .672 Win Percentage when sorting specific statistics.

The Good

Opponent has 3+ turnovers: 42-4 (91%)
OSU 65+% completion percentage: 47-5 (90%)
OSU scores a defensive TD (Int, Fum): 20-4 (83%)
OSU punts 3 or fewer times: 34-7 (83%)
OSU scores any return TD (Int, Fum, KR, PR): 39-8 (81%)
OSU scores a special teams TD (KR, PR): 21-5 (81%)

The Bad

OSU has 3+ turnovers: 15-15 (50%)
OSU punts 7+ times: 11-14 (44%)
Opponent scores a Defensive TD (Int, Fum): 8-11 (42%)
Opponent scores any return TD (Int, Fum, KR, PR): 13-19 (41%)
Opponent scores a special teams TD (KR, PR): 5-8 (39%)

Kyle P. here again after that post from Blake.

So basically just create a +3 turnover margin every game and you’ll win it all. Easy, right?

But really these are the things Gundy preaches. Take care of the ball. Score on defense. Turn teams over. Get great special teams play. They are little things. Things you think about and practice in August and September, but they have contributed to what has become a really solid national program in Stillwater. And they’re the reason Mike Gundy will soon have 100 wins as the head coach at Oklahoma State.
